    Summary PVC, one of top five thermoplastic synthetic resins, is next to the mostly used polyvinyl resin in the world. It takes up 29% of the total sales of synthetic resins in the world. PVC is easily processed through die stamping, lamination, injection molding, extrusion molding, rolling, and hollow blowing. It is mainly used to manufacture soft plastic products such as artificial leather, thin film, electric wire jacket or hard plastic products such as slab materials, windows and doors, pipeline and valves. In 1999, China consumed a total of 3,670,000 tons of PVC resin. In the following several years, the need for PVC will keep growing by the rate 6.0% as drawn by downstream demand. By the year 2005, the demand for PVC will attain 5,400,000 tons. Soft PVC products in China include film, cable jacket, plastic shoes and synthetic leather products, while hard PVC products mainly indicate abnormal shaped pipelines and slab materials. The soft and hard PVC products in China maintain an approximate average proportion of 70: 30. The proportion of hard PVC products have been on steady growth in recent years, with its proportion at 30.0% for 1996; about 35% for 1997 and up to about 40% by the year 1999. The demand for PVC in China is rocketing and domestic output can not meet the requirement, which leads to considerable increase in import. From 1995 to 1999, the annual import of PVC maintained a surprising average growth by 134%, with the biggest increase among the top five common synthetic resins. For the imported PVC, pure PVC resin occupies the largest share by about 73%; non-plasticized PVC takes up 24%; and plasticized PVC takes up 3%. PVC market in China still has much room for development. Downstream plastic processing is also enjoying a rapid growth. Especially for highly value-added products, the demand of PVC grows by as much as 10%, while PVC products currently produced in China can not meet the need of downstream processing industry and most highly value-added products rely on import. If foreign investors can make use of the broad market in China and its rich human resources to lower labor cost and establish some PVC equipment with high technical content, good benefits will certainly be available.
