  • Description:
Summary The value of market demand in China coating industry amounted to 29.99 billion Yuan in 2000, increased by 19.2% than that in 1998. The volume of coating was 1.99 million tons in 2000, increased by 19.2% than that in 1998. The market share of foreign-funded enterprises had increase from 25.6% in 1998 to 30% in 2000, while that of state-owned, collective, share holding and individual enterprises dropped from 63.9% in 1998 to 13.2% in 2000. The import of coaints and investment by foreign-funded enterprises have played an important role in China coating industry development. Up to 2000, there are more than 4200 coating manufacturers, of which there are 857 wholly state-owned enterprises and non-state-owned enterprises with annual sales revenue more than 5 million Yuan. Altogether, these 857 coating enterprises possesed 31.09 billion Yuan of asset, 27.02 billion Yuan of sales revenue, 1.6 billion Yuan of profit and 1.1 billion Yuan of value-added payable tax in 2000. The output of China coating industry was over 2 million tons in 2000 (It was estimated to be 2.8 million tons by some related authorities). Of which, the output of wholly state-owned enterprises and non-state-owned enterprises with annual sales revenue more than 5 million Yuan was 1.84 million tons in 2000, 2.2 times as much as that in 1990. The average growth rate of coatings has kept in he level of 9% since 1990 and China became the fouth largest coating producing country in the world in 2000.. The proportion of synthetic resins improved from 52% in 1998 to that of 80% in 2000. The proportion of oil-based paint dropped from 48% in 1980 to that of below 30% in 2000. Among oil-based paints, the proportion of low pollution coatings such as water soluble coatings, powder coatings, high solidifying coatings and solvents accounted for 25% at present, compared 1% in 1980. The coating manufacturers mainly concentrate in Guangdong, Shamghai, Shandong, Zhejiang, Shanxi, Beijing and Tianjin. The output of these 8 provinces and cities accounts for 76.5% of the whole country. The enterprise size has been enlarged in recent years. But the size of domestic enterprises still very small compared with that of whole world coating producing enterprises. There are only 17 large scale enterprises whose sales revenue accounted for 15.9% of China whole coating industry. Most small sized enterprises with are still perplexed with such problems as low class product, backward technology, heavy pollution and weak competitiveness. More and more world leading coating manufacturers entered into China market by establishing solely-owned or Joint Ventures enterprises. They focus on producing high or middle class coatings and have become a big rival for state-owned enterprises and collective enterprises in coating market. Up to 2000, there were 168 foreign funded coating manufacturers which had 10.14 billion Yuan of asset, 9.34 billion Yuan of sales revenue and 0.78 billion Yuan of profit, accounting for 32.6%, 34.6% and 49% of the whole industry respectively. The ratios of profit to asset and profit to sales revenue of foreign-funded enterprises are much higher than that of state-funded enterprises and collective enterprises. The foreign trade of coatings keep booming The value of coating export and import amounted to US$ 497 million and 497 million respectively in 2000, increased by 67.4% and 32.8% than that in 1995. The average import price of coatings was US$ 2172per ton, while that of import was US$ 1673. In general, import grows fater than export and there is a big gap between export and import in terms of the quality and price of coatings. The per captia consumption of coatings is 2.4 kg in China, which is much less than that of developed countries. It is estimated that demand for cotings will grow at a high rate of 7% in the next 5 to 10 years in China. According to the "Tenth-five year chemical industry plan' published by China State Economy and Trade Commission, the consumption of coatings will increase to 2.7 million tons in 2005 from 200 million tons in 2000. China will put more efforts on developing energy-saving and nonpolluting coatings, high-class synthetic resin coatings and other coatings with spcial properties. The output of high-class resin coatings will increase from 70% of total national output at present to 80% of that in 2005. The proportion of urethane paints, acrylic paints, epoxy resin paints etc will gain a further increase. The output of water soluble coatings, highsetting coatings and powder coatings will account for 35%, 10% and 6% of the whole industry respectively in 2005. The water soluble auto coatings, aviation coatings, ship's coatings, container coatings, railroad car coatings, high class furniture coatings and other coatings with special properties will be developed quickly.
