Spatial Analysis of Environment, Public Health and Regional Development

Jiangxi Normal University, SanJiangHu Office of Jiangxi Government, and the University of Michigan will co-organize a workshop of  Spatial Analysis in Environment, Public Health and Regional Development on June 25-26, 2004 in Nanchang, Jiangxi, China. 

 

Located in Jinagxi province, Poyang Lake is the largest fresh lake in China. Containing about 97% of Jiangxi province region, the Poyang Lake watershed is one of the most rich, economically developed areas in Chinese history. Splendid mountains and wonderful islands can be found everywhere around Poyang Lake. Poyang Lake is an important international wetland, and an important storage lake for the main stream of Yangtze River. It possesses very important ecological functions, such as floodwater storage and biological diversity protection. Named as "The Kingdom of Rare Birds", Poyang Lake hosts more than 4,000 white cranes in the winter, accounting for more than 95% of total of white cranes in the world. It is one of the 10 largest ecological conservation areas in China, and one of the global important ecological areas designated by WWF.

 

The Workshop will bring scholars from the University of Michigan, the University of California at Berkeley, and some other universities and research institutions to Nanchang with a focus on spatial analysis in environment, public health and regional development. The workshop will discuss how to apply spatial theories, methodology and technology in environmental and regional studies, especially to the Poyang Lake region. The topics will include spatial theory, spatial statistics, and the application of GIS and remote sensing technology. The participants will also discuss further collaboration in studies on the Poyang Lake region.

 

We expect more than 100 workshop participants from universities, research institutions, and government agencies within and outside of China.
