The Workshop Announcement
Spatial Analysis of Environment,
Public Health and Regional Development
Nanchang, Jiangxi, China
June 25-26, 2004
Jiangxi Normal University, SanJiangHu Office of
Jiangxi Government, and the University of Michigan will co-organize a workshop of Spatial Analysis in Environment,
Public Health and Regional Development on June 25-26, 2004 in Nanchang, Jiangxi, China.
Located
in Jinagxi province, Poyang Lake is the largest fresh lake in China.
Containing about 97% of Jiangxi
province region, the Poyang Lake watershed
is one of the most rich, economically developed areas
in Chinese history. Splendid mountains and wonderful islands can be found
everywhere around Poyang Lake. Poyang Lake is an important international wetland, and an important storage
lake for the main stream of Yangtze River. It possesses very important
ecological functions, such as floodwater storage and biological diversity
protection. Named as "The Kingdom of Rare Birds", Poyang Lake hosts more than 4,000 white cranes in the winter, accounting for
more than 95% of total of white cranes in the world. It is one of the 10
largest ecological conservation areas in China,
and one of the global important ecological areas designated by WWF.
The Workshop will bring scholars from the University of Michigan, the University of California at Berkeley, and some other universities and research
institutions to Nanchang with a focus on spatial analysis in
environment, public health and regional development. The workshop will discuss
how to apply spatial theories, methodology and technology in environmental and
regional studies, especially to the Poyang Lake region. The topics will include spatial theory, spatial
statistics, and the application of GIS and remote sensing technology. The
participants will also discuss further collaboration in studies on the Poyang Lake region.
We expect more than
100 workshop participants from universities, research institutions, and
government agencies within and outside of China.
